If you are interested in obtaining a FCC Amateur Radio operator's license, then the first place we would recommend to start would be the "Hello" site sponsored by the ARRL.  Once you find out more information and decide that it's right for you, then we suggest that you acquire the current study materials from the ARRL as well as the excellent study aids created and compiled by Joe Pirkle, AD4IH, available here on this site.  After reading those study guides and absorbing that information, you will likely want to test that knowledge with online tests before participating in one of our monthly test sessions.  For that online testing and practice, we highly recommend the fine folks at HamTestOnline.

The LARC has their own Volunteer Examiner Team which is headed up by Ernie Haynes, KG4YNI and Mike Oliver, KT2T.  We have completed the process of having our team officially recognized by the ARRL and we have formalized a regular testing schedule for the third Saturday of each month starting at 9:00 AM.  The test sessions will be held at (this will be changing, always check here for the current location!):

The Lakeland Police Department
Community Room, 2nd Floor, take the elevator or stairs
219 N. Massachusetts Avenue
Lakeland, FL 33801

(click on 'Directions' link on the left to view a Google map)

As of 2008-07-01, preregistration will be required to attend a LARC test session, and you can register as late as the Friday before the session.  There are several reasons why we are not allowing walk-in candidates going forward, but chief among them is the need to ensure that we have the appropriate VE resources available, we may need to acquire extra materials from the ARRL VEC to support a large number of candidates, and a change of venue may be required depending on the number of candidates.

To register for an examination session, you can contact us via email at veteam@lakelandarc.org or if you don't have email then you can contact Ernie directly via phone at 863-858-5233 between 16:00 and 20:00 ET, Monday through Thursday, and he will get you registered.  Please try to use email if possible so that the burden doesn't fall upon Ernie alone.  Thanks!

IMPORTANT!  When preparing to come in for your exam, please bring a pen, one or two sharpened pencils, a simple (non-programmable) calculator if you desire, at least two forms of identification (one must have a picture), a photocopy of your existing license (if upgrading), and any CSCEs of record.  It is important that you arrive prepared so that other candidates aren't disturbed during their exams.

If you are interested in being part of the LARC VE Team, please contact us here.

Thanks for your support, we are excited about serving the amateur community in Polk County and beyond!
